snow winter in the PNW

Well, it's that time again.  The 1-2 week period in the greater Seattle area where temps drop way lower than we are used to, and snow is eminent.  Upon reflection, this seems to happen right before Christmas.  It was 2 years ago we had that terrible windstorm where we lost power for 5 days (others lost it longer).  I seem to remember some snow about this time last year.  Now, where I live, it's barely covering the ground.  It is icy.  And so starts the complete idiot's guide to how NOT to drive in snowy and icy conditions.  It's not that I mind snow, in fact it's wonderful if I don't have to leave my house or the roads are already cleared.  It's the other people on the road that think because they have a big ass SUV they can drive the same speed on ice.  Or those that think because there is snow, they have to drive 5mph in a 40.  ARGH!!

Now, we are parents in the world of the elementary school system.  We are governed by school closures and holiday schedules.  Today, at least the school is opening, just 90 minutes late.  Although, I fear this Wednesday we might be closed.

I checked the 10-day weather forecast, it's supposed to be freezing like this for a week.  So no, doesn't look like we'll have a White Christmas.  It looks like it will be a wet, potentially slushy Christmas.  ...sigh...

Seriously?! ... Palin candidacy sparks working moms debate - U.S. business- msnbc.com

Honestly?  This is what we are debating on Sarah's qualifications as VP?  Now, any reader of my rants knows, I support the Democrats.  Palin scares the crap out of me, I do NOT want her in my White House.  That said...who the HELL cares that she will be a working mother?!  Yes, yes, women still make less than men.  Women tend to carry more of the responsibility in house management.  Women often CHOOSE a less stressful or powerful job for family.  And at the same time, some FAMILIES decide the Mom will be the bread winner and Dad either has a lesser status/paying job or stays at home.  Wow, is this really surprising?  Could it be that some women could be smarter, more driven, more ambitious than their spouse?  Get off it people.  Women are NOT the lesser gender.  Why would Palin with a young, special needs child and about to become a grandmother be any less qualified, focused or successful than any man in the same place.  Are you even suggesting that a father wouldn't rush home in an emergency in the family?  That he would not stand by his pregnant, teenage daughter and give her the support and love she needs?  My god look at Britney Spears and the wonderous help her father has stepped up to provide (didn't see Lynne doing that did you?).  Or any single dad with primary custody, or a widower who can raise his children and work to earn money.

Let's stop looking at our gender differences and focus on the real topic - historical performance, policy support, platform promises.  Please look at this when deciding on who to vote for, not that Obama is a minority or Palin is a woman.  Don't make this campaign about what is out of our hands (I certainly didn't choose to be a girl, even though I did choose to be a mom) make this campaign about the issues and the candidate you think will drive what you want out of this country.

oh - and by the way - OBAMA/BIDEN !!!

Do you know how to get involved?  Torture is torture is torture.  I don't understand how one human being can do this to another.  Yeah yeah - brain wash, intense training whatever...it's still a human being on the other end.

Fortunate

I found this article about a child of neglect from Dooce.  Much like Heather wrote, I was horrified reading this the last 13 minutes I was in the office.  Certainly puts things in perspective.  I am fortunate to have such a happy, healthy child.  Who, pretty much on a daily basis, tells me "This is the BEST day of my life!"
